The Six O' Clock News (Unrelated Incidents) by Tom Leonard

This poem explores dialect and the prejudices faced by those who speak with regional accents.

Remember, the difference between accent and dialect:
Accent = a way of pronouncing a language (for example, the Scouse accent in Liverpool or the Southern accents of the United States of America)
Dialect = varieties of language in different regions, classes, cultures etc. (for example, slang words specific to London or words usually spoken by the working class).

ETYMOLOGY

Etymology is the posh word for the study of the origins of language. It is a very interesting area. Try the exercises on this page in the lesson or at home.
